Are you listed?

CIC, that is the acronym for the Chamber Information Center, the log cabin in the WalMart parking lot on the Newport-Palmyra town line that houses the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce. We dispense information daily.

"Can you tell me the phone number to a shop I passed on Route 7?"
"Do you have maps for ATV trails?"
"Where can a find a part for my (recreational) vehicle?"
"What is the name of that real estate office I saw on Route….?"
"Do you have any roofers among your members?&"
" Is there a local restaurant that serves…., that’s not a chain?"
" Can I get there on my ATV?"
" Do you have a church that….?"
" Do you have a community bulletin board?"

That is just a sampling of some of the questions that have come through this office from visitors and callers in the last week.

Weekly someone calls looking for a contractor, a professional service, directions to or names of local businesses or attractions…and beyond.

If we don’t know about you, your business or services, it’s not always likely we can relay that to those individuals. It’s not that we won’t tell people about non-members…it’s just that we may not know you exist, or if we do, where you are or what you do.

Advertising is a great medium…but only if it reaches the right target. Our visitors and callers are often your target.

The Sebasticook Valley Chamber is starting to wrap up its newest guidebook to the area. The book will be published by next month, barring delays. The publication got a late start this year, but we need to replace the one in circulation. We’ve always tried to “sell” it as a Who’s Who in Business in Sebasticook Valley. Sadly too many businesses miss that opportunity, and we are left to wonder if we have specific services or products available in the area. It simply comes down to: if you don’t help us by providing your information, we can’t help promote your business.

Summer people are looking for people to make repairs and renovations at their vacation homes. People relocating here want to find your service to accommodate their move. Long-time residents develop a unique need for someone to provide a service and want a “reputable” business that fills the need.

That is part of the service at CIC. We are NOT just the tourist information center.

If you are a member, drop by the CIC; tell us what you do, where you are, and the best means for people to reach you. If you are not a member, “get listed,” so we know you are out there, and the service or product you provide.

Get a membership application at CIC or on our website, http://www.ourchamber.org/. You can see a list of members and expect to be part of that list when the website is updated in the coming months with a “new and improved” version.

It’s a simple concept: Support your Chamber, so your Chamber can support you!

Top off your Sunday with an ice cream social and a concert…

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, June 20, the Sebasticook Valley Community Band will perform outside (weather permitting) at the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce information center, in the WalMart parking lot, Route 2.

Bring your own chairs, enjoy the performance and the Chamber will provide ice cream! Donations welcome.

An introduction from the new Administrative Assistant

Allow me to introduce myself…for those who don’t know me. I am Brenda Seekins, longtime resident of Sebasticook Valley and newest employee of the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce. Late this fall, the Board of Directors of our Chamber voted to appoint me as the new Administrative Assistant to the board. I began my new position at the Chamber building in early November. It is both a new position for me and for the Chamber as a "down-sizing" of the former executive director position. It reflects a desire by the board to maintain the operations of the chamber’s information center, continue standard operations of the chamber and its many functions and fundraisers, but in a manner reflective of our economic times. Translated that simply means a few less hours of "open-time" at the Chamber building, and possibly more involvement by board and committee members in regular events sponsored by the Chamber.
As a longtime resident of Sebasticook Valley, and a former member of the Chamber board myself, I bring experience with Chamber functions and traditions, as well as the region to my new position. As a longtime writer-reporter-photographer-editor, for those who know me, I bring an interest in a new level of communications between the Chamber and its members. I hope to expand and update the Chamber newsletter, regular press releases on Chamber functions and provide assistance to its members with press or publicity.

My primary question to current and prospective members is "how can Our Chamber help you?"

Drop by and say hello or drop me a note, if the Chamber or I, can help you in some way or answer questions about the Chamber’s services. svcc@midmaine.com Brenda
In the meantime, keep in mind…"Our mission is to promote and maintain a favorable environment and quality of life for the individuals, businesses and professional people of our community and surrounding communities whenever possible."
New hours at the Chamber will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; generally closed on Thursday except when a familiar volunteer may be running the office; and always open when our Welcome flag is flying.
